Martyrdom and suicide are not the same

God rest the soul of Aaron Bushnell, the 25-year-old in the Air Force who set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C. 'Free Palestine,' he declared as he was dying. While he meant his death as a political protest, it was suicide. And it should not be celebrated.

Holistic approach helpful for lower back pain

Dear Doctors: I suffer from chronic back pain, and my doctor told me that the only treatment available is pain medication. Is that because the problem is with my lower back? Are there any other treatment options for this kind of chronic pain?

Reader wonders how to engage the mean girls

DEAR HARRIETTE: As an ordinary girl, I have recently caught the attention of the campus crush, who has started to court me. This unexpected turn of events has stirred up jealousy among the other girls, leading to an atmosphere of animosity and dislike all directed toward me. I find myself feeling overwhelmed by the negative energy and uncertain about what to do next.

Donald Trump ‘lawfare’ update

Former President Donald Trump’s victory in the Supreme Court 14th Amendment case, together with delay and disorder in the criminal cases against him, has set off panic among Democrats who hoped to use prosecutions and other legal maneuvers to keep Trump from winning a second term. “Supreme Court ruling darkens critics’ hopes for a judicial curb on Trump,” read one headline in the Washington Post.

Reader in relationship questions befriending men

DEAR HARRIETTE: I recently received advice from someone suggesting that I should not befriend boys because I already have a boyfriend. This is my first time having a boyfriend, but I have a group of male friends I have been close to for years. It feels weird to walk away from my true friends in order to have a relationship. This advice has left me contemplating whether I should follow this suggestion. I value friendships with both males and females, but I am unsure if it is appropriate to limit my interactions based on my relationship status.

DO JUST ONE THING

• According to the Audubon Society, exterior lights turned on at night are light pollution to animals like migrating birds. The artificial light spatially disorients the birds and gives them a false horizon; birds often will fly toward backlit windows in order to correct their flight, ultimately ending in death. At least 100 million birds are killed every year by exterior lights. How can you help? Turn off your exterior lights between midnight and dawn (which are peak migration hours for birds) and close your blinds and drapes to keep interior lighting indoors. Use timers if turning the lights on and off becomes burdensome.

Eldest sister struggles with siblings’ success

DEAR HARRIETTE: I am the older sister to two incredibly successful younger siblings, both thriving in their careers at Fortune 500 companies. While I couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments, I find myself struggling to make ends meet, and the contrast in our financial situations is difficult to ignore. Witnessing their achievements has, at times, created a sense of inadequacy about my own life. While I celebrate their victories, I can't help but question my own independent path and wonder why I haven't achieved the same level of success.
