A celebration of the life of Roy Lee Shepherd, 96, lifelong Custer County farmer/rancher, will be held Friday, May 12, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church, officiated by Reverend Daniel Mosburg, Reverend Odie Nunley and Reverend Doyle Kinney. Burial will follow in the Butler Cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home.
Roy Lee Shepherd was born November 8, 1926, to Grover Cleveland Shepherd and Mattie (Spencer) Shepherd southwest of Butler, OK and entered his eternal rest early Monday, May 8, 2023, in the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Clinton, OK.
Family will greet guest Thursday May 11, 2023 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home.
In 1930, the family moved to a farm northeast of Butler on West Barnitz Creek. Roy remembered moving to the farm at the age of four years old. On the new farm he learned to play, study, and care for the land and livestock. Even at an early age, he loved to hunt, fish, and trap. He attended school at Womble, a one room schoolhouse for eight grades. There was one teacher for all grades.
Roy married Doris Snider on December 29, 1951, in Butler, OK. They have lived east of Butler on West Barnitz Creek since December 1953, where they have farmed and raised cattle. Roy served on the Butler Co-op Board for several years.
He is a member of the First Mennonite Church of Clinton. He enjoyed fishing, all sports, and going to ballgames. He liked playing cards and was quite a domino player. One of the things he enjoyed most on the farm was building and repairing fences.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris, two infant siblings, brothers, Jimmie Shepherd, R.B. “Bozo” Shepherd, Carl Shepherd, four sisters, Dorothy Goodall, Essie Roush, Lorene Paris, and Maxine Adams.
He is survived by daughter, Debbie Mosburg and husband, Darrell, Custer City, OK, two sons, Jim Shepherd and wife, April, Sulphur, OK, and Randy “Runt” Shepherd and wife, Laura, Butler, OK, brother, Clarence “Sandy” Shepherd and wife, Pauline, sister-in-law, Melba Shepherd, OKC.
He is also survived by 14 grandchildren David Mosburg and wife Jordan, Drew Mosburg and wife Meagan, Daniel Mosburg and wife Jennifer, Jody Shepherd, Riley Shepherd and wife Katelyn, Tucker Shepherd and wife Jordan, Casey Holland, Lauren Edmonds, Kristin Williams, Courtney DeSpain and husband Dustyn, Mackenzie McKenna and husband Doug, Gage Butcher, Sydney Hoffman, and Reid Butcher and 17 greatgrandchildren, Austin, Tyler, Joseph, Haley, Jackson, Jace, Shiloh, Meadow, Brittain, Asa, Maysen, Marlowe, Adyson, Oaklyn, Klara, Sophie, Rhyen, and two great-great daughters, Peyten and Anastasia.
