Funeral services for Vera Ruth Butler will be held Friday, February 26, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church in Weatherford Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Vera Ruth Butler was born July 27, 1933, in Watonga, Oklahoma to James Coody and Ruth Gorby and passed away at home in Weatherford on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at the age of 87.
Vera was raised and attended school in Watonga, graduating with the Class of 1951 She was married to Bill Butler in July of 1950 and they made their home in Watonga. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Southwestern State College in Weatherford.
Vera started teaching in Burns Flat then continued her career in Arapaho until she retired after teaching a total of 25 years. On the eve of retirement, she co-founded and ran Butler Security Service with her husband Bill for many years.
Vera was active in the church, served as a youth leader, and never missed a Sunday. She was an avid reader and amassed a sizeable library, but especially enjoyed reading her Bible.
She loved sitting in the backyard in her rocker, doting over her pets and going to the cabin at Foss, as well as playing dominoes and cards with family and friends. She was known as the voice of reason within the family.
Vera is survived by her two sons, Gerald Dean Butler of Weatherford, and James Dylan and his wife, Mihaela Butler, as well as her 4 grandchildren, Dan, Gabriella Austin, and Troy Butler, 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Butler; son, Mitch; daughter, Charlotte Diane and her infant daughter.
