Mary Sue Caldwell, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023, at the age of 79.
Mary Sue was born on February 8, 1944, to Johnnie and Zelma Balden in Carnegie, OK. Her life was filled with love, family, hard work and farm life. Mary Sue’s educational journey began walking with her neighbors to Union Corner School and she later attended Carnegie Schools, where she graduated with the Class of 1962. Recognizing the importance of furthering her education, she attended college at the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha and earned her business degree in 1964.
On September 30, 1964, Mary Sue married the love of her life, Paul Caldwell and they made their home on the family farm in Carnegie.
They shared 59 wonderful years together and she truly embraced being a farmer’s wife. Mary Sue’s greatest love was for her family and especially being Maw-Maw to her grandchildren. A temporary, one semester, fill-in position at Carnegie Elementary turned into 37 years serving as a Teachers Aide.
One of her biggest joys there was taking money at football and basketball games.
She said many times that she made lifelong friends working that gate. Even after retirement, she loved driving “Mawmaw’s School Bus” and picking Jesseca and Jake up after school every day. And of course there were always snacks before she dropped them off at home. Mary Sue’s legacy and memory live on through her funny sense of humor, her outgoing personality and her huge heart. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the honor of being a part of her wonderful life.
