By Roi Allen Henson Jean Pauling, a dedicated teacher and pillar of the community, passed away on the morning of June 22nd in Cordell, Oklahoma at the age of 72.

Jean was more than just an educator; she was a beacon of love, compassion, and faith.

Jean taught for over 40 years in Oklahoma, 30 of those at Arapaho-Butler School, touching countless lives with her dedication and innovative teaching methods. Her classroom was a sanctuary where students were not only educated but also nurtured and encouraged to become their best selves.

While Jean was known for her kindness, she was also a formidable presence. Where others might have seen problem children as a burden, she saw their potential and relished the challenge. I was fortunate enough to be one of Jean’s students during a particularly challenging period in my life. In the 4th grade, amidst a tumultuous upbringing and an uncertain childhood, Jean stepped in as more than just a teacher. She became a mother figure, embracing me into her family with open arms. Her love and compassion provided a source of strength and stability when I needed it most. Her faith and devotion were evident in every act of kindness and every word of encouragement.

Many of my shenanigans and disrup-tive qualities were halted the moment I first stepped into her class, and she pulled me aside to have “the talk.” It was immediately apparent I’d met my match. Jean’s ability to see beyond the surface and address the core of a student’s behavior with understanding and firm guidance transformed my actions and outlook on life.

She saw my potential when I struggled to see it in myself and helped me believe in a brighter future. Her support extended far beyond the classroom, and her influence has shaped the person I have become.

Not only was Jean a dedicated educator, but she was also an integral part of the Clinton & Arapaho, Oklahoma communities. Her active participation in local initiatives, selfless volunteering, and mentorship of numerous individuals stand as a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Her dedication to community service was a shining example of her generous spirit and her relentless pursuit of helping those in need.

Jean’s legacy is one of love, faith, and devotion. She leaves behind a family who adored her, a community who respected her, and students who will carry forward the lessons she imparted. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness and the profound impact one person can have on the lives of many.

As we remember Jean Pauling, we celebrate a life welllived and a heart that touched so many. Her memory will live on in the stories we share, the lives she influenced, and the love she generously gave. May she rest in peace, knowing that her legacy of compassion and ability to see potential will continue to inspire us all. Jean’s life was marked by unwavering service to her family, students, and community, and her legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Her memory will be cherished by her devoted husband, Jim Pauling, their three sons, Jeff & James Pauling, Joseph Ray, grandsons Wesley Pauling & Damon Ray, and her many students.
