Katherine Ann Heerwald, a beloved pillar of the Clinton community, passed away on August 4, 2024, at OU Medical Center, surrounded by her cherished family.
Born on May 18, 1949, in Clinton, Oklahoma, to Harold and Katherine Penhall, Katherine lived a life marked by love, dedication, and an enduring spirit.
Raised in Elk City, Oklahoma, Katherine graduated from Elk City High School in 1967, a testament to her early commitment to her community and personal growth.
It was during this formative period that she met William “Bill” Heerwald, the love of her life. The two were married on December 26, 1970, beginning a partnership that would span over five decades. Their union was blessed with two sons, James and Michael, who became the heart of their lives.
Katherine’s presence in Clinton was a vibrant one. She began her career at The Emporium and Flowers by Peggy before joining Southern Expressions.
Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she purchased the store alongside her longtime friend, business partner, and confidante, Sandra Fletcher. Their partnership was not just professional but a testament to a deep and enduring friendship.
Katherine was known for her boundless love and fierce dedication to her family. She embraced her role as a “Boy Mom” with passion, guiding and nurturing James and Michael with unwavering support.
As her family grew, Katherine’s heart expanded to include her four granddaughters— Alyssa, Harli, Courtney, and Lily.
Her role as Mamaw was perhaps one of her greatest joys, and she delighted in every moment spent with her granddaughters, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Katherine is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Katherine Penhall; her sister, Penny Cherry; her brother, Joe Penhall. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Bill Heerwald, of the family home in Clinton; her sons, James and his wife Carolyn of Clinton, and Michael and his wife Traci, also of Clinton; her cherished granddaughters, Alyssa Hardy, Harli Day and her husband Hunter Day, Courtney Heerwald, and Lily Heerwald; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service honoring Katherine’s remarkable life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Clinton. Pastor Temple Diehl will officiate, and the service will be conducted under the direction of Lee Hometown Funeral Home. Following the service, Katherine will be laid to rest in Clinton Cemetery.
Katherine Ann Heerwald’s legacy is one of deep love, unwavering commitment, and enduring community spirit. Her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched and the enduring love of her family.
