Chapel services will be held for Calvin Smith, 94, of Shell Knob, Mo., at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Kiesau Memorial Chapel.
He died Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Cox Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Mo.
Smith was born Aug. 24, 1924, to Roy and Elsie (Haan) Smith in Custer City. He was raised and attended school at Custer City.
He worked as a farmer until joining the U.S. Army during World War II. Smith was sent overseas where he was a tank commander during the war.
On June 1, 1947, he married Leota G. Reimers in Custer City.
The couple moved to Wichita, Kan., where he found employment with Graves Truck Line. In 1996 they moved to Shell Knob, Mo.
While in Shell Knob, Smith became a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Survivors include a daughter, Charlene Icenhour and husband George of Frisco, Texas; a son, Michael Smith and wife June of Wichita, Kan.; two grandchildren, Jason Smith and wife Nicole of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Vanessa Dondlinger and husband Raymond of Wichita, Kan.; a brother, of Idaho; and four great-grandchildren.
The family has suggested that those wanting to give memorial donations in his name do so to the VFW in Shell Knob, Mo.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home.
Burial will follow the services at Custer City Masonic Cemetery.
