Robert Clarence Johnson, 92, passed away on August 23, 2024, at the River Valley Nursing Home in Clinton, OK. He was born on June 16, 1932, to Ruben & Arvella (Hines) Johnson, in Hammon, OK.
Robert grew up on a farm by the Washita River and later attended school in the Pieflat & Arapaho, OK areas. At age 17, Robert joined the United States Army as a tank driver, participated in three battles and was a Purple Heart Recipient. He was very proud to have served his country.
He married the love of his life, Bernice Catlett of Clinton, OK on June 5th, 1953 in Amarillo, TX, making a living as a professional painter and carpenter.
In 1967 they moved to Canute, OK for 40 years, where, because of his great love for western things, built a very unique western style workshop.
Elementary public school classes would enjoy field trips to observe his western town theme including replicas of Blacksmith shops, Indian artifacts and some of his homemade western style furniture. He also enjoyed country western music,
western movies and living out in the country.
He loved his family and created memories treasured by his two sons, Bobby & Steve, of camping & fishing in the Colorado Rockies. In Robert’s later years he would enjoy watching his son, Steve, work in the barn or visiting together over coffee while sitting on the porch.
Robert’s greatest love was attending church and, of course, little Sugar, his Shih Tzu puppy, of whom he’d say, “If anyone offered me a million bucks for that little Sugar, I wouldn’t take it!” Robert and his great sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
